Entrecard? Has it Failed It's Bloggers?

Labels: , , , , ,

When I started up this blog, I found myself hurting in traffic and wanting more people to visit this little known blog of shameless Warcraft worship. I wanted to also meet new people, and hell wanted to learn the ropes of running a blog: from posting (of course!) to web page set up and design, to the behind the scenes work of SEO, social bookmarking, and audience building. To get myself heard and out there. But this process for the semi small time blogger is slow, time consuming, tedious, and results are not instant. But I plugged away cause well It Was/Is Fun. And so I plugged away, till I found by accident actually a site called Entrecard.com.

See that widget with the cute picture of today's blogger, and all my lovable droppers? Through Entrecard I was able to 'drop cards' and exchange 'credits' between other webmasters to promote my blog on theirs, and their's on mine. I can choose who I want on my widget, and they can on theirs. This made it so I drop on new blogs (which introduced me to new friends and faves) and those people ether , or their readers drop on me through their pages and I get new readers as well. Profit for everyone! Well everyone except Entrecard.

Today everyone in the network got this post. Basically they are being ran to the group running the site as is, so need to generate some income from this venture. The quickest way they saw to do this: ads. Or rather having every EC widget have a 50% chance of displaying a paid ad, or a 50% chance of a EC purchased one from another blogger that they approved to show on the widget. That means when people buy an ad slot on your widget instead of having 100% air time, they have to compete with random ads (unless you pay in credits of course to bounce the ads). This of course have caused a big up roar with EC users.

Dragonblogger posts a feeling of cautious hesitation, and that this was one on of the only routes the struggling company could do to keep afloat. Some bloggers like Eleanor's Blog have taken down their cards in protest disavowing Entrecard, and some like Turnipofpower.com are feeling betrayed and angry over what many see as Entrecard selling out and taking choice out of the hands of bloggers.

I was waiting on them to approve my other blog but now I doubt I'll use it there. From the massive amounts of posts on Today.com forums, I doubt they'll allow Entrecard for much longer as they do not approve of outside income revenues on their blogs at all.

I myself have loved that widget on my sidebar and am torn to weather it should stay prominently up there. I wonder how you readers out there feel about this controversial move by Entrecard?

I have a blog with no ads, and I will remove EC from that blog when the changes go into effect.

I have other blogs (on a different Blogger account. Not sure why I did that...) that have a few ads in them, so I will probably keep EC there for a while, to see how it goes.

I felt betrayed when Entrecard stole 230k credits from me. Soon I will be able to attach a monetary value to that theft. Yes, I will be reporting it as a tax loss. Mr. Langdumb had better be sure he reported it as a profit!

Well atm I'm gunna be a turtle and keep them up. I've been looking into CMF and Blog Explosion as possible alternatives. The downside is that I like keeping the blog as unclutted, and with minimal ads as possible. Poorly played EC has played...

HI! I am still not really sure what is going on, I have read what EC has emailed me. I read through in a hurry yesterday. I go through again and find out what it is all about.
